GREENLET was selected for a Demand Response project in the UK

October 14, 2013

Western Power Distribution (WPD) and the Energy Saving Trust have launched ECHO: Energy Control for Household Optimisation, a unique field trial to determine the ability to monitor household energy use through a method called ‘demand response.’ The project will investigate the ability to reduce or shift household energy demand and determine the willingness of residents to actively participate in such an exercise.

The field trial, coordinated by the Energy Saving Trust, will evaluate the potential deployment of residential demand response technology by installing a number of monitoring kits, supplied by Greenlet, in 200 homes across the Midlands in the UK.

Each home will receive two or three ‘smart plugs’ and a control centre, with each smart plug monitoring and controlling the electricity usage of an appliance, such as a washing machine, dishwasher, or home entertainment system, and communicating this usage it to a control centre. This will provide insight into how much electricity appliances are using in the home and when.

The consumption data will then be made available to consumers through a personal online web portal and smart phone application which will give participants the control to adapt their electricity consumption based upon instant real-time feedback. WPD will also make use of Greenlet’s energy management software to monitor capacity and stage demand response events where it is able to shift the energy demand of participating households remotely. Households will be incentivised to take part in such events, with the Energy Saving Trust investigating their willingness to participate and the impact on their day-to-day lives.

Site acquisition for the project is currently taking place, with Greenlet monitoring and control devices being installed in January 2014. Data collection and demand response events will continue until January 2015, with analysis and reporting taking place in spring 2015.

Energy Saving Trust was selected to partner with WPD on the project due to its experience designing and managing technology field trials in UK homes. Through our role as a consumer-facing organisation, we provide impartial energy saving advice to millions of UK households each year. WPD is the electricity distribution network operator for the Midlands,
South Wales and the South West in the UK.
Greenlet Technologies, provides scalable energy control solutions for electric utilities, through advanced software and algorithms for energy control centres, web/mobile applications for consumers and kits.
